Translations
"if he abandons his faith, there is no use even trying to lead him to repentance. By their sin of apostasy they re-crucify the Son of God and have publicly repudiated him." Hebrews 6:6 The Passion
Apostasy-the abandonment or renunciation of a religious belief
Repudiated-refuse to accept or be associated with.
"if then they turn their backs on it, washing their hands of the whole thing, well, they can't start over as if nothing happened. That's impossible. Why, they've re-crucified Jesus! They've repudiated him in public!" Hebrews 6:6 The Message
Cross References
"For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them." 2 Peter 2:21
"How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?" Hebrews 10:29
"But rebels and sinners shall be broken together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed." Isaiah 1:28
What Does It Teach You About God?
He is a forgiving God however He will not tolerate having His Son's Crucifixion wasted or taken for granted. Also He is aware of this Human flaw therefore he states the penalties outright in Hebrews 6:6 so there can be no question as to whether there is Salvation once someone has turned their back on the faith.
What Have You Learned About Man/Self?
That there are still some people who will experience God's love and salvation yet turn their backs on God. "Once saved, Always saved" is not a true biblical principle. Its a feel good phrase that is not supported by scripture.
Reflection and Application
When reflecting on these scriptures, I realize that casual wandering away or distancing yourself from God does not mean immediate admittance into hell. However, it is a dangerous path to take or entertain because it gives the devil a foothold and may very well lead to Hell if pursued to the point of turning away from the faith. When faced with situations that tempt me to turn away from God I can remember these verses and what happens if I take my salvation for granted.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you so much for the Salvation you feely give to all who seek it. Please help me to stay on your path, learning and growing in faith. Guard me from any attacks, temptations or trials that lead me away from you and down the dangerous path to hell. Keep me in a state of thanksgiving for the precious gift you have given me: salvation and a seat with You in Heavan. In Jesus Name Amen.
